Zodarion-Class Robotic Companion

While most people might think of the Myrmidon as the most common Trader robot, Traders immediately think of the trusty Zodarion. These squat, small robots scuttle on four legs and have two pincers that, when taken together, give it the appearance of a robotic crab or, perhaps, a cross between a spider and a stubby beetle.

Designed to be integrated into Trader Skinsuits, most Zodarion-class Robots will make a home in their owner’s upper back, secreting themselves away in a small pocket, where they can connect to whatever systems the armor has (or neural interface systems the Trader might be equipped with). When deployed, they excel at handling computers (they plug directly in and carry out complex computer tasks with lightning speed), and with their advanced sensors. Their integrated ultra-scanner (10 mile search range, 1 mile imaging) assists them when looking for secret panels or lost key-cards, and they excel at observing in combat, offering real-time combat assistance by pointing out dangers to their partnered Trader. If the Trader has the right systems to take advantage of it (such as a smartgun and a HUD), the Zodarion can offer a +3 to aimed attacks and can “lock on” their tactical scanner as an action independent from its owner. They also have hyperspectral peripheral vision, which means they pick up details that Trader might miss, and with a wider field of view.

Most Zodarion come with additional features. They might focus on computer intrusion, or assist in repairs, or help a security agent find clues. In all cases, their scuttling legs, ability to cling to walls and their small size make them invaluable aids to Traders who need to get access to something obscure in the depths of their Ark.

Unlike most other Trader Robots, the Zodarion isn’t a monstrous thing to behold. Some Traders even consider them cute! Of all Trader robots, the ones most likely to receive nicknames or special treatment is likely to be a Zodarion, despite the fact that they are as cold and humorlous as any Trader robot.

Zodarion Upgrades

Criminal Investigation Tools

13 points
Hardware Upgrade
Cost: $1,500

Trader Security Agents often employ Zodarion equipped with forensic tools and programming to better search an area. These are able to scan small samples with a Forensics skill of 12 (-5 for anything larger than, say, a drop of blood). They offer only limited assistance in integrating the clues together into a cohesive picture, but they provide plenty of fodder for a skilled criminologist.

Advantages: Accessory (Pocket Analyzer (Forensics)) [1]

Skills: Forensics (H) IQ+2 [12]-12;

Security Bypass Tools

25 points
Hardware Upgrade
Cost: $3,000

Traders have a variety of circumstances in which they might need to legitimately bypass security features. The Zodarion with security bypass tools has an integrated toolkit built into its grippers that allow it to bypass electronic (but not mechanical) locks and hack into computers. It may attempt to hack into computers or bypass other security systems with an effective skill of 12.

Advantages: Accessory (Mini Toolkit (Electronics Operation Security)) [1]

Skills: Computer Hacking (VH) IQ+2 [16]-12; Electronics Operation (Security) (A) IQ+2 [8]

Starship Repair Tools

10 points
Hardware Upgrade
Cost: $1,500

The Zodarion is often used as an aide in repairs. Its small size and ability to grip onto surfaces allow it to access small or hard-to-reach areas of infrastructure or a ship. Once there, it can engage in repairs (or sabotage) at the request of their owner. Ship bays often crawl with Zodarions (and Centimani swarms) assisting a single Trader who directs the insectoid spiders all over a vehicle, repairing various elements.

The Zodarion can repair with an effective skill of 12 (with the usual +2 to IQ from distributed computing, if available). Its small tools apply a -2 to work on a vehicle, giving a total of effective skill 10 for a single Zodarion. If ten or more are working on it, in addition to the distributed computing bonus, consider allowing the combined efforts of all Zodarion to be the equivalent of a full toolkit, negating the -2 penalty.

Advantages: Accessory (Mini Toolkit (Mechanic)) [1]; Cutting Edge Training (Trader Tech) [1]

Skills: Mechanic (Starship) (A) IQ+2 [8]-12;
